What is Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is a medical procedure to remove the cloudy lens (called a cataract) from the eye and replace it with a clear artificial lens, known as an intraocular lens (IOL). Cataracts typically develop with age and cause blurry vision, glare, or difficulty seeing at night.

The most common method is phacoemulsification, where a tiny ultrasound probe breaks up the cloudy lens, which is then removed through a small incision. The artificial lens is implanted during the same procedure.

It’s a quick, outpatient surgery—usually lasting about 15–30 minutes per eye—with high success rates and minimal recovery time. Most patients experience significantly improved vision within a few days.

Why International Patients Choose Korea for Cataract Surgery

  1. Advanced Technology
Korea is equipped with state-of-the-art eye surgery systems, including femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery, premium intraocular lenses (IOLs), and high-resolution diagnostics. These tools allow for safer, more precise procedures and faster recovery.
  2. Highly Skilled Surgeons
Korean ophthalmologists are internationally trained and known for their expertise in delicate eye surgeries. Many eye clinics specialize exclusively in cataracts and refractive surgery.
  3. Affordable Pricing
Compared to countries like the U.S., Japan, or Singapore, Korea offers high-quality cataract surgery at a more affordable cost, often with transparent package pricing for international patients.
  4. Quick Scheduling
Shorter waiting times are a major draw. Many clinics can accommodate consultation, surgery, and follow-up within a few days, ideal for medical travelers.
  5. Customized Lens Options
Patients can choose from a wide range of IOLs, including multifocal, toric, or EDOF lenses, depending on their vision needs and lifestyle.
  6. English-Friendly Services
Top eye clinics in Seoul, Busan, and other major cities offer English-speaking staff, coordinators, and translators to help international patients feel supported throughout their visit.
  7. Medical Tourism Experience
Korea is a leader in medical tourism, offering concierge services, airport pick-up, hotel partnerships, and cultural experiences tailored to foreign patients.

Types of Cataract Surgery Procedures

1. Phacoemulsification (Phaco) – Standard Method

  • Most common and widely used technique.
  • A small ultrasonic probe breaks up the cloudy lens.
  • Fragments are suctioned out, and an intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted.
  • Minimally invasive with fast recovery (often used in Korea).

2. Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS)

  • An advanced version of phaco using a femtosecond laser to make precise incisions and soften the lens.
  • Offers enhanced precision, especially for patients with astigmatism or complex eye shapes.
  • Often paired with premium IOLs (e.g., multifocal, toric).

3. Extracapsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE)

  • Used for very advanced cataracts that cannot be broken up with ultrasound.
  • A larger incision is made to remove the cloudy lens in one piece.
  • Less common today due to longer recovery times.

4. Intracapsular Cataract Extraction (ICCE)

  • An older technique where the entire lens and its capsule are removed.
  • Rarely used now due to high risk and availability of modern methods.

Lens Options for Cataract Surgery

  • Monofocal IOLs – Standard lens for distance or near vision (not both).
  • Multifocal IOLs – Offers both near and distance vision; reduces need for glasses.
  • Toric IOLs – Corrects astigmatism.
  • EDOF (Extended Depth of Focus) – Sharp focus across a range of distances.
